* Abstract: I will talk about heterotic Calabi-Yau models with hypercharge flux breaking, where the visible E8 is directly broken to the standard model group by a non-flat gauge bundle. It is shown that the required alternative E8 embeddings of hypercharge, normalised as required for gauge unification, can actually be found. But for all except one of them we prove a no-go theorem, asserting that no suitable geometry leads to a standard model.
